 Gladwyne History
The Old Guard House Inn located at 953 Youngsford Road in Gladwyne,
PA 19035 has a history. In 1790, Henry Hemboldt built it, meaning for it to be a tavern, but his petition was denied. The next owner was John Rawlins,
the captain of the volunteer rifle company in the War of 1812. The quiet Philadelphia suburb of Gladwyne changed the name of the building to the
Merion Square Hotel by 1880. It was a calmer alternative to the nickname "The War Office". The building served many purposes when prohibition
arrived, like a post office, ice cream parlor, meeting hall, dog kennels, etc. The building got its name, "The Old Guard House Inn" probably because
of the training and recruiting sessions by the volunteer rifle company.
