Some Lansdowne History
Lansdowne was settled in the early 1700's and was named after the English estate of Lord Lansdowne. Before it was separate from Upper Darby, the area that is now Lansdowne Borough used to be filled with various industries like textile, paper, cotton and dye mills. The area also became known for its small but elegant hotels and guesthouses like The Evergreen Lodge, Hartel's Guest House and The Windermere. A trolley was made along Baltimore Pike, linking the many towns between Media and Philadelphia. Many middle-class families wanted to settle in Lansdowne, which is just six miles away from Philadelphia's City Hall. A lot of residential development started between 1900 and 1910.
