Paoli
History
Paoli's history as a village goes back to the establishment
of the railroad during the nineteenth century. It is named after the 18th
century Corsican hero Pasquale Paoli. One of the township's earliest roads was Swedesford Road, probably around 1718. Lancaster Avenue used to be called
The Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike and was built between 1790 and 1800.
This roadway in the region paved the way for the tavern industry. The Paoli
was the most famous tavern. The most infamous was the second
Blue Ball Inn, which is still standing today.
